  1. He pitched it as rwo becuase he didn’t think he would get the funding for 3

  2. Should’ve gone to the next step too:

Why would you do three movies when it is six books?

  3. Why not a 14 hr Ken Burns documentary on the events of The Silmarillion?

  4. Three MOVIES for the Elven-kings under the sky,

Seven LIVE ACTION SERIES for the Dwarf-lords in their halls of stone,

Nine YOUTUBE CHANNELS for Mortal Men doomed to die,

One SILMARILLION for the Dark Lord on his dark throne In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie. One SILMARILLION to rule them all, One SILMARILLION to find them, One SILMARILLION to bring them all and in the darkness bind them
In the Land of Mordor where the Shadows lie!

  5. Also, Weinstein was supposed to produce it and wanted only one movie

  6. Peter Jackson met with like a dozen studios had turned him down on his trilogy idea and had all suggested that maybe he rewrite it as a single, 1-2 hour long tale.

Eventually he got so frustrated that he started shopping it around as only 2 movies, thinking maybe he’d meet the studios halfway and maybe if the first did well, he could then convince them to expand the 2 movie plan into 3. Of course, then he met with Newline, who actually supported the full trilogy idea.

  7. It was only pitched as two films to get the studio to agree, the plan was always to go ahead and make three.

  8. Only one book, in 3 volumes :

    Letter 165
P.S. The book is not of course a ‘trilogy’. That and the titles of the volumes was a fudge thought necessary for publication, owing to length and cost. There is no real division into 3, nor is any one part intelligible alone. The story was conceived and written as a whole and the only natural divisions are the ‘books’ I-VI (which originally had titles).

  9. I’m honored! This was a fun fact that was fairly well known when the movies were being made. It certainly wasn’t a secret but I just love the story. Original pitch was 1 hobbit movie plus 2 LOTR movies making a trilogy, then they had trouble with the rights for the hobbit so he was stuck shopping the 2 LOTR movies, and then he took the meeting with New Line.

  10. Afaik Peter wanted to do three but thought it was difficult to pitch but lucky enough: your meme.

  11. Technically there are 6 books…

Edit: nevermind someone already said that

  12. Yall need to watch the extended features. We all known this since like, 2007.
