  1. Balrogs had wings but couldn’t fly. Thus, they are a type of penguin. Or perhaps an ostrich.

  2. Tolkien said they had wings and there really is no reason to believe that they were just a metaphor, so I think they do. And if you really think there’s no way to be sure, refer to the movies. They are definitely good enough to earn the right to settle canonical debates the books didn’t give a clear answer to. So, in conclusion, Balrogs had wings.

  4. Seriously why would anyone say balrogs had no wings? The one in the LoTR books written by Tolkien himself has wings (and in the movies too). What’s there to argue about then?

  6. I’m reading Fellowship right now and it clearly states that the Balrog has wings.
