Yeah for all the “Elrond couldn’t actually stop him” he totally could have, then made a convincing lie that no one could refute.
“The volcano exploded when the ring neared it, barely made it out alive”
“The ring compelled Isildur to pitch himself into the fires”
“The ring corrupted Isildur and turned him against me, I defended myself”.
Any number of things could work, it’s just be a “he said, no one can counter” situation. I’ve heard that Isildur didn’t really know how serious the ring was, but tbh he should have had enough intuition to know the dangers of a “ring of power” forged in secret by Sauron.
it was an accident I swear

Unfortunately he died of natural causes.
Read that in Gimli’s voice anyway.
He took a little tumble off a little cliff.
Never trust an elf!
Lol This is funny as a joke but it’s essentially “The Eagles could have Flown the Ring to Mt. Doom: Part 2” in terms of how much sense it makes. [We just had this conversation in another thread.](https://old.reddit.com/r/lotrmemes/comments/hp1ikn/cant_be_that_bad/?ref=share&ref_source=link)
